4-H families that compete together, win together

XENIA — For the Hawkins family, raising livestock and showing their animals at the Greene County Fair is a way of life. The tradition continued Tuesday at the goat/sheep barn.

Cousins Avery Hawkins and Sydnee Hawkins won grand champion and reserve champion in the market goat show and showmanship event. Avery’s twin sister, Aley, won fourth overall in the meat market competition.

“I really was surprised when my goat won. The judge didn’t seem to like him very much,” said Avery Hawkins.

Sydnee Hawkins, a nine-year member of 4-H, has only spent four years showing goats but prefers showing them to showing cattle or hogs.

“They’re easier to handle,” said Hawkins, who enjoys mentoring her younger cousins in the goat barn.

“I feel comfortable around them and I’m proud of them when they do good,” added Hawkins, 18, and a senior at Greeneview High School. Her cousins — who are 11-years old — live in Cedarville and competed in other fair events.

The grand champion for dairy market goats was Taylor Warner. Like the Hawkins’ clan, it was also a family affair for the Stewarts when Asher won reserve champion and his brother, Zander, placed fourth, while sister Piper, placed third. The Stewarts are members of the Greene Acres 4-H club.
