XENIA — Xenia Community School’s Nutrition Services held its first Buccaneer Junior Chef Competition May 9.

Fourth-grade students from all five elementary schools (Arrowood, Cox, McKinley, Shawnee, and Tecumseh) met at Arrowood and put forth their best culinary efforts to dazzle the judges of the chef competition.

Students had been invited to sign up for the competition where they prepared their favorite salad recipe in front of a panel of local foodies who judged the event. Five students signed up to compete in person and prepare their dish with minimal help. Assistance with chopping, dicing, and cooking hot food was provided by Nutrition Services staff.

The student’s dishes were judged based on originality, healthy attributes, ease of preparation, kid-friendliness, taste, and plate presentation. Bonus points were given for using healthy items such as legumes, proteins, and fresh fruits in the recipe.

Judges included XCS Board President Mary Grech, and Superintendent Dr. Gabe Lofton. The winner will be announced in the Superintendent’s weekly newsletter to the community Friday, May 17, and at XeniaSchools.org.

In addition, the winning dish will be offered on a future menu in school cafeterias. Students will receive foodie-themed prizes to inspire them in future culinary creativity.

The Junior Chef Competition will become an annual event hosted each spring by XCS’ Student Nutrition Services, rotating among five elementary buildings.
