BEAVERCREEK — A new, independent escape room game business is opening in Beavercreek, thanks to the efforts of two enterprising local products.
Like most of the popular game rooms opening across North America, Great Escape Game Dayton has a simple concept: Players have one hour to escape a themed room by following clues and completing puzzles.
“When you get in the rooms you have anywhere from 20 to 25 puzzles, different things that you and your group need to solve to escape the rooms,” said Daniel Huiet, a co-owner of the venture.
The business will open Saturday with two room themes – “The Vault” and “The Outbreak” – with a third – “The Tomb: Ramses’ Curse” – to be opened soon, according to Huiet.
In the first scenario, players begin in a bank vault with the lights off.
“The first thing you gotta do is figure out how to turn on the lights, go from there to break into the safe, get the loot and escape within an hour before the guard comes back,” Huiet said.
In the second scenario, players are working in a world that’s been infected with a deadly virus.
“You have one hour to break into the laboratory and get the virus antidote and escape the laboratory in time to save yourself and the world,” Huiet said.
In the third scenario, players are tomb raiders working for a world-renowned artifact collector.
“Your job is to steal the treasure of the pharaoh and get out within an hour,” Huiet said.
Each of the rooms is designed to help players feel immersed in the game.
“The whole feel is you’re actually there for each room,” Huiet said. “…Once you get into the room and you see that hour timeline on the TV, and it starts clicking, your heart starts to race…. You know it’s coming to an end, and you know you have to get out.”
Huiet and his partner Mike Keggan, both Beavercreek High School graduates, looked to open the business as a way of providing another local entertainment option.
“It’s exploding all over the country because … sometimes you just kinda run out of things to do,” Huiet said. “It’s new and exciting. It’s a brand new concept.”
