FAIRBORN — City Manager Deborah McDonnell and Police Chief Terry Barlow gave the oath of office Monday, April 11 to Fairborn’s newest police officer — Christopher Sopher.

A West Carrollton resident and graduate of Chillicothe High School, Sopher began working as a jailer at the Fairborn Police Department in September 2014. While working as a jailer, he attended the Greene County Criminal Justice Academy, graduated in May 2015 and obtained his Ohio Peace Officers Certification.

Subsequently, he was hired by the Miami University Police Department to serve as a police officer on Aug. 31, 2015. However, Sopher returned to the city of Fairborn to continue his career as a law enforcement officer.

Sopher indicated that he chose a career in law enforcement because he always wanted to help people. His first major in college was psychology, but after seeing some of his classmates from high school experience dependency to heroin, he wanted to try to reduce the chances of addiction taking place.

Sopher has eight brothers and is the only member of his family in law enforcement. He knows his siblings will look up to him to be an example and to do his job to the best of his abilities. As for future goals, Sopher hopes to instruct others in law enforcement.

“I would eventually like to be an instructor in an academy while I am still working as an officer,” Sopher said. “I would like to be able to make an impact on recruits and spread the knowledge that I have learned. My main goal right now is to do the job the right way with hopes to eventually teach in an academy.”

Sopher will go through 18 weeks of training with the Fairborn Police Department.
