Fairborn to host discussion forum

FAIRBORN — Fairborn residents are invited to attend the city’s monthly citizens forums, which have been described in past meetings by city officials as an opportunity to discuss community matters among citizens and leaders.

The next event takes place 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 100 E. Main St., focusing on options to help community members in need as well as presentations on the upcoming renewal levies, Vectren gas line work and the Fairborn Area Historical Society.

“We’re going to be having a discussion about all the different programs in Fairborn that provide meals to low-income people,” Fairborn Mayor Dan Kirkpatrick said during council comments at the latest meeting. “Organizations are going to come and talk about what they do. One of the problems we run into is we know one church is doing one thing and one organization is doing that, so we don’t have a good grasp on all the different programs that are providing meals to the less fortunate.”

Citizens forums have seen an increase in attendance since last year, up 21 percent, Kirkpatrick said during his state of the city address at the latest regular council meeting, Monday, Feb. 15.

“Citizens can come to our monthly citizen’s forums, where discussion is less formal than council meetings,” Kirkpatrick said during the address. “These events are held at various locations in the city and begin at 7 p.m.”

The event focused on mental health and options for helping such during the January citizens forum, took a break during the month of December and asked community members how they would like to see the Fairborn City School Board and Fairborn City Council work together going forward during the November citizens forum.

In future months, citizens will have the opportunity to attend these monthly events March 28 at the Fairborn Senior Housing, 221 N. Central Ave.; April 25 at Fairborn High School, 900 E. Dayton Yellow Springs Road; May 23 at Maple Heights Baptist Church, 144 W. Funderburg Road, according to the city’s website.
