Rotary Club to host annual spaghetti dinner

FAIRBORN – The Rotary Club of Fairborn will hosts its annual spaghetti dinner later this month, with the goal of raising funds to ultimately benefit the community.

“[The Rotary Club] is a group of business leaders who have been around for well over 100 years that have gotten together to improve the community and the world,” Greg Nijak, who is serving as the chair of the event for the first time this year, said. “They meet and you get a variety of people from different backgrounds, and decisions are made to figure out what we can do … each community, each local rotary is doing things in their community to improve it. The weekly comradery has a way of making life better.”

The meal will include spaghetti, salad and a drink, and will be served 5-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at Giovannis. Attendees are welcomed to eat their meal at the restaurant, or opt to carryout. Tickets are $10, and can be obtained from any Rotary Club member, the Senior Center in Fairborn, Wright Nursing and Rehab or at the door during the evening in which the event takes place. Door prizes will be available every half hour for attendees who choose to eat at Giovannis. Nijak said prizes normally consist of a bottle of wine.

“One of the biggest Rotary projects was to eliminate Polio worldwide – we’re practically there so everyone can be vaccinated,” he said. “That was a worldwide project.”

The dinner serves at the local Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year; Nijak is expecting a crowd of 150 to 200 people to be served. Money raised during the event will go into the club’s general fund, which aims to improve the community, or take on foreign projects. Nijak said the Rotary Club donates books to the library on a weekly basis, and in the past has worked toward making a water pump available for a village in Africa. Fairborn’s Rotary Club has been in existence for more than 50 years, according to Nijak.

“[I hope] they [get] some good food from Giovannis as they always do, and they had a great time supporting their community through the rotary,” Nijak said.
