GREENE COUNTY — September is National Library Card Sign-up Month and Greene County Public Library is celebrating by releasing special edition library cards featuring characters from the Peanuts comic strip.

The artwork was provided gratis to libraries across the country through the American Library Association. For patrons interested in replacing their well-worn cards, the replacement fee of $1 will be waived for the rest of 2016. As always, new library cards will be free. Patrons will also have their choice between two Peanuts designs—one with Charlie Brown and his dog, Snoopy, the other with Snoopy reading in an armchair.

While the Peanuts design is a lot of fun, the library director, Karl Colón, says the decision to redesign library cards is also a strategic one. “Few things have the universal of Peanuts,” he says. “We are hoping to capture the attention of young people as well as the folks who saw the first runs of Charlie Brown’s misadventures in their newspapers. Peanuts is a cultural touchstone for so many people. Likewise, the library is a service provided to everyone regardless of age, gender, race.”

The special edition Peanuts library cards are available at each of the Greene County Public Library’s seven community locations through the end of the year. After the limited edition cards are all issued, the library will return to its standard design. Signing up for a library card is free to any Ohio resident with an ID.

The Greene County Public Library system is available on the Internet at www.greenelibrary.info. The library system consists of seven locations: Beavercreek, Jamestown, Cedarville, Fairborn, Yellow Springs, Xenia and Bellbrook.
