FAIRBORN — The morning of Fairborn’s Fourth of July parade was a busy and exciting time, especially for the people waiting for their floats to be judged.

They hectically put the finishing touches on their creations, their hard work and pride on display. Even groups from outside of Greene County came to participate on this festive occasion.

Carolyn Hollon organized a small group of volunteers to judge these floats, which could be considered works of art. They had the opportunity to win in 12 categories, ranging from engineering to ingenuity to most star-spangled. The winners received a plaque as well as a banner to put on their float for the parade.

– The Wright State Alumni Association and Spirit Unit won the Judges Award;

– Fairborn City Schools won the Community Award;

– OSU Alumni of Greene County won the Engineers Award;

– Boy Scouts Troop 27 won the Democracy in Motion award;

– Cub Scouts Pack 182 won the Youth Ingenuity award;

– Diamonds and Pearls Community Dance Group won the Fantasia award;

– Amvets Ladies Auxiliary Post 148 won the Honor and Glory award;

– Bridge Community Worship Center won the Life in the Spirit award;

– JR. Amvets Post 148 won the Star Spangled Celebration award in the youth category;

– Fairborn Veteran’s Memorial Project Committee won the Star Spangled Celebration award in the adult category;

– Realty Central won the Pride in Fairborn award;

– The Fairborn Senior Center was honored with the Grand Marshal Award.

After the judging took place, numerous volunteers worked to line up more than 100 of the parade participants. They left from Fairborn Plaza at 10 a.m. and started marching along the parade route. Now in its 69 year of floating down Fairborn streets, observers could recognize what the parade route was going to be by looking at the people sitting out on the sidewalks.

One out-of-town guest was in awe of the turnout of the citizens for this event, expressing amazement in the amount of community members who came together to watch the community tradition take place.
