BRISBANE, Australia — The son of three-time Formula One champion Jack Brabham will serve at least six months in prison after being found guilty of the rape and indecent treatment of a young girl.

Gary Thomas Brabham, a former Formula Ford and Formula 3 driver in Europe, was convicted last month in Brisbane’s District Court after pleading not guilty to the charges involving a child under 12.

Australian Associated Press said the 55-year-old was sentenced Friday to 18 months in prison, to be suspended after six months.

During the trial, prosecutors alleged the offenses occurred between 2003 and 2007 when the girl was between six and 10.

Gary Brabham made an attempt at Formula One racing in 1990, but failed to qualify for the first two races of the season and quit.
