JAMESTOWN — For whatever reason, tiebreakers seem to rarely occur in high school tennis matches.

Not so, Thursday night at Jamestown’s Seaman Park.

Tiebreakers were needed to determine the outcome of four sets in four different tennis matches between Ohio Heritage Conference rivals Cedarville and host Greeneview, with the visiting Indians claiming a 3-2 team win.

“We played really well. I was really happy with the play of my doubles teams, especially,” said Cedarville coach Stephen Eggleston. “My second doubles team lost — that was their first match together — but they came back from being down 5-2 and sent that third set into a tiebreaker. And our first doubles team, that was their first victory. We needed a doubles win and they pulled through for us.”

At first singles, Greeneview’s Josh Jenkins needed a tiebreak win to defeat Jason Brown in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Cedarville’s Ben Heath was the day’s only victor who didn’t require the need for a tiebreaker to eventually win. Heath battled the Rams Evan Rinehart to an eventual win in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The Indians Colton Lewis claimed a 7-6 (5) first-set win, then blanked Jake McComas 6-0 in the second, to win at third singles and put Cedarville out in front 2-1 with the two doubles battles yet to finish.

Both of the doubles matches went three sets before a winner could be determined. And the second doubles match came down to … you guessed it … a third-set tiebreaker.

Cedarville’s first doubles pair of Ian Waltz and Everett Tye rallied for a tough 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-4 win over Greeneview’s Will Irvin-Marcus Gollmer duo to clinch the team win, but that didn’t stop the second doubles players from battling to the very end.

In that match, Greeneview’s Alex Nixon-Luke Barker tandem rallied to beat Cedarville’s first-time duo of Zack Rubaskey and Anna Kinsinger, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

“All these tiebreaks, it was an extremely close match. But Cedarville just came up with a couple more plays at the end than we did,” said Greeneview coach Troy Terrill. “It was nice to see Josh (Jenkins) get a win at first singles. He’s had his share of injuries in the early going, so that was good. And our second doubles team pulled through to win as well.”

Cedarville is now 1-3 overall this early, soggy Spring tennis season, while Greeneview falls to 1-6.
