Xenia Christian wins over Yellow Springs
XENIA — Host Xenia Christian doubled up Yellow Springs, 24-12 by halftime, then weathered a second-half Bulldog comeback try to claim a 46-39 win in Thursday’s Metro Buckeye Conference game.
Rachel Sweeney led the Ambassadors with 15 points scored, Katie Riddle finished with 14, and Ari Nelson added nine.
The Bulldogs’ Elizabeth Smith led all scorers with 22 points, and Amani Wagner finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The win keeps Xenia Christian in second place in the MBC with a 14-3 overall record, 5-2 in the conference. The Ambassadors are scheduled to play a 6:45 p.m. game at Dayton Christian on Monday.
Yellow Springs (0-18, 0-8 MBC) also plays Dayton Christian next. The Bulldogs will be the host at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Rescheduled Xenia-Fairborn game announced
The chilled out Xenia versus Fairborn girls basketball game, originally scheduled for this past Wednesday, has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25 at Fairborn’s Memorial Fieldhouse. The junior varsity game will start things off at 5:30 p.m.
Xenia (3-13, 1-3 Greater Western Ohio Conference, South Division) will host Lebanon at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 23 before matching up with the Skyhawks. Fairborn (4-11, 1-3 GWOC South) hosts Miamisburg at 12:30 p.m. today before Monday’s matchup with the Buccaneers.
Demmings sets league scoring record
FAIRBORN — Kim Demmings set the all-time career scoring record in Horizon League women’s basketball history Thursday night at WSU’s Nutter Center, but it wasn’t enough as Milwaukee shot 55 percent over the first three quarters and went on to an 82-60 Horizon League win.
Demmings tied the record with her 2,340th career point, a three from the left wing at the 7:34 mark of the fourth quarter and then became the all-time scoring leader with a pull-up jumper in the lane with 5:99 remaining. The senior guard finished with 25 points, giving her 2,345 for her career, ahead of Milwaukee’s Traci Edwards, who set the previous mark from 2005-09.
The Panthers hit 33 of 66 shots for the game, 10 of 21 from three, while the Raiders shot 37 percent and were just four of 23 behind the arc and 10 of 22 at the foul line.
Five players scored in double figures for Milwaukee (10-7, 4-2 Horizon) as Steph Kostowicz had 20, Jenny Lindner 15, Alexis Lindstrom 13 off the bench, Sierra Ford-Washington 12 and Emma Roenneburg 11.
Wright State (15-4, 5-1 Horizon) hosts league-leading Green Bay (16-2, 6-0 Horizon) at 2 p.m., Saturday.
Yellow Jackets win at home
CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University’s Christina McQueen recorded a career-high 20 rebounds, while scoring 20 points, in the Yellow Jackets 81-40 win over Bluefield State, Thursday night at the Callan Athletic Center on the Cedarville University campus.
Abby Wolford led Cedarville (14-5) with 17 points, Kaysie Brittenham scored 13 and Ellie Juengel added 10 in the win.
Tanasia Blake and Lyndsay Hatfield led the Blues (1-16) with nine points each.
Cedarville will next host Davis & Elkins at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28 at the Callan Athletic Center.
Six Raiders named to HL All-Academic squads
INDIANAPOLIS — The Horizon League Friday released its fall all-academic teams with six Wright State student-athletes being recognized, including 2014 men’s soccer honoree Eric Lynch of Bellbrook who was named for the second time.
To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 36 quarter-hour credits.
Faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors in the league make the selections to the teams.
Wright State student-athletes selected to their respective sports’ all-academic teams are:
