Woods-West named DII All-American

WILBERFORCE — Central State University defensive end Justin Woods-West has been selected to the 2015 AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team as announced on Thursday by the American Football Coaches Association.

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves.

Woods-West, a senior from Detroit, Michigan, set a school record for most sacks in a season (13.5) since CSU achieved NCAA Div. II status in 2005. He finished as the SIAC leader in sacks and tackles for loss (22).

Woods-West is the first Marauders player to be recognized by the AFCA since 1994 when defensive end Hugh Douglass earned the same distinction. Douglass went on to a successful NFL career and was inducted into the CSU Hall of Fame in 2010.

Central State finished with a 5-5 ledger in 2015, the best record the program has had since 1995. Defensively, CSU put together an impressive resume. They ranked in the top-10 nationally in total defense, sacks (no. 1 with 37), tackles for a loss (2nd with 107), takeaways (fourth with 34), rushing defense (89.2 yards per game), interceptions (21) and scoring defense.

The honor from the AFCA is the latest in a long list of awards for the senior. Earlier this week, he was an Honorable Mention on BoxToRow’s All-American Team. He was also selected to the D2CCA Super-Region Team and to the All-SIAC Defensive First Team.

Demmings on Naismith watch list

ATLANTA — Wright State University senior guard Kim Demmings has been named to the Naismith Trophy Women’s 50 Watch List, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Thursday. The Naismith Trophy is presented each year to the nation’s top player.

Demmings (Richmond, Indiana), an All-American candidate, is currently second in Division I with 228 points this season and her 22.8 scoring average is 10th. Demmings leads the nation in field goal attempts (197) and also ranks third in field goals made (83), fifth in three-pointers attempted (79), 15th in three-pointers made (26), 29th in free throws attempted (51) and 43rd in free throws made (43).

For her career, Demmings has scored 2,205 points, which is second among active Division I players behind Minnesota’s Rachel Banham (2,349). Her 796 field goals made are third on the active career list while her 2,020 field goal attempts are first, her 20.2 scoring average is fourth and her 706 three-point attempts and 560 free throw attempts are both fifth.

The early season watch list will be reduced to the midseason 30 on Feb. 11, with the 10 semifinalists named on March 2. The four finalists will then be announced on March 20 with the winner to be announced on April 3 during the Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis.

Wright State (8-2), who is ranked no. 7 in Graham Hays’ latest ESPN Mid-Major Poll and no. 12 in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Poll, visits Eastern Kentucky at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Raiders then wrap up the nonleague portion of its schedule by hosting Mount St. Joseph at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, followed by Georgia at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20.
