Cedarville tops women’s G-MAC basketball poll

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University is the pick to repeat as Great Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball champion in 2015-16.

The Lady Jackets were selected in a pre-season poll of the league’s head coaches.

CU waltzed to a record of 27-4 overall and 15-1 G-MAC last winter before winning the conference tournament.

The Jackets, who were ranked as high as 17th in the country, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament – the first in the program’s history.

Coach Kirk Martin enters his 15th year at his alma mater with a career record of 358-100.

Cedarville earned six first-place votes and 48 points to top the eight-team league’s pre-season poll.

Kentucky Wesleyan grabbed the other two top votes and earned 42 points for second place. Trevecca (Tenn.) is third.

The rest of the poll in order includes Davis & Elkins (W.Va.), Ursuline, Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.), Ohio Valley (W.Va.), and Salem International (W.Va.).

On the men’s side, Cedarville was picked to finish fourth. Two-time defending champion Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.) was voted first and is followed by Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca (Tenn.).

For the first time ever beginning this season, the G-MAC tournament champions each receive an automatic bid to their respective NCAA Division II Midwest Region tournaments.
