Beavercreek sweeps Northmont

BEAVERCREEK — After what their coach termed a “sloppy start” to Tuesday night’s girls volleyball match with Clayton Northmont, the host Beavercreek Beavers got better as the match wore on in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-10 win at Beavercreek High School.

Several of the Beavers players could be heard yelling “First Place!” as they left the court. Beavercreek (10-3, 3-0 GWOC Central) entered the match in a tie for first place in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s Central Division with Kettering Fairmont. The outcome of Tuesday night’s Fairmont-Centerville match hadn’t been reported when the Beavers had won their match, but coach Tim Green likes that the team is in control of their outcome.

“We were pretty sloppy at the start. I didn’t think we played as well as I think we are capable of playing,” Green said. “We’ve got a young group and right now it’s all about developing a consistent effort in every single game we play. … But I think we’ve really improved throughout the course of the year. If you compare us to how we looked in the summer from when we first started to now, I’d say it’s really night and day.

“It’s a challenge right now, because we control our own destiny in the GWOC Central. So we need to have a little bit more of a consistent effort if we want to stay at the top. But overall, we’ll take it. A win’s a win. It’s not the best game we’ve played, but we’ll take it.”

Senior Tiare Saylor led Beavercreek in kills with 14. She is currently ranked fourth in the conference in total kills with 134.

Sophomore hitter Kelly Goenaga-Lask came up with seven blocks in the win, senior Joyce Eid came up with 21 digs. Eid, a senior, is fourth in that category in the GWOC with 187. Beth Boos (third in the GWOC with 317 assists) dished out 30 assists in Tuesday’s win over the Thunderbolts.

Northmont coach Jim Smith wasn’t happy with how his team played.

“It was a weak effort. We weren’t mentally focused and we made a whole lot of errors,” he said. “We’ve been improving, and we had been taking a lot of steps in the right direction, but today was a step backwards.”

Smith did like the play of Ali Pompeii, however. The senior outside hitter came up with 21 digs against Beavercreek.

Beavercreek has its next three matches on the road. They play a GWOC Central contest at Springfield at 7 p.m. on Thursday. They then have a pair of nonleague games against host Mason and Cincinnati Seton on Saturday, before the all-important GWOC Central battle with co-leading Fairmont. That game is set for Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Beavercreek High.

Northmont (5-10, 1-2 GWOC Central) closes out its regular season with two GWOC Central matches. The Bolts play at Centerville on Thursday. They will then host Springfield on Tuesday.
