XENIA— Danny Naylor tossed for 333 yards and five touchdowns, and the host Xenia Buccaneers claimed a 31-21 win over Vandalia Butler, Friday night at Doug Adams Stadium.

Naylor, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound senior, connected on scoring strikes of 61, 25, 25, 10 and 6 yards to lead the Bucs to their first win of the season.

Unofficially, Naylor completed 24 of 37 passes with one interception. He also scrambled for 14 yards on the ground.

Buccaneers back TeAndre Adams turned in the team’s biggest rushing performance of the still-young season. After being grounded for minus-7 yards in the first half, Adams finished the night with 78 yards gained on the ground on 16 carries, to supply some much needed balance to the offense’s attack.

Wideouts Meechi Harris and Ray James finished with 82 and 80 yards receiving respectively, and Harris hauled in a pair of TD passes. Ray James was injured early in the second half and had to be helped off the field. There was no word on James’ injury, as the game ran late.

Buc defensive back Ryan Johnson iced the game with just over two minutes to go when he returned an interception to the Aviators 6-yard line. He picked off another Aviators pass on Butler’s next possession with just over a minute left to play.

Naylor then took a knee and ran out the clock.

Butler senior quarterback Chandler Craine tossed for 134 yards for the Aviators, but his last two went into Johnson’s hands. Aaron Fields was his main target. He snagged six passes for 105 yards.

Both teams return to action on the road on Friday. Xenia (1-3) will head north to take on Troy for a 7 p.m. contest. Vandalia Butler (3-1) also is on the road. The Aviators play at Springfield, also at 7.

(Due to the late finish of this game, we were unable to interview coaches Bob DeLong of Xenia, or Greg Bush of Vandalia Butler before presstime. We’ll have a follow-up interview with Xenia coach DeLong in Tuesday’s Xenia Gazette and Fairborn Daily Herald.)
