Football is ‘like a box of chocolates …’

0

We all know the scene in the movie “Forrest Gump” where Tom Hanks’ character is describing how “life is like a box of chocolates.” Well, apparently football seasons fall along those same lines, too.

In the weeks leading up to the 2015 high school football season, there wasn’t a single coach who stepped up and told us something along the lines of “You know what? I think we’re an amazing group of athletic talent and we plan on going out each Football Friday and kickin’ some butt!”

Not one.

So it’s probably fair to say that there were some surprises last Friday, both good and bad.

We start with the Beavercreek Beavers. A year ago, they were bashed by Xenia in their opener and endured a long season of disappointing losses the rest of the way. And so what do they do on Friday when they played that very same Xenia Buccaneers team on Friday? They flat out dominated them, 45-7 on Xenia’s beautiful, brand spankin’ new home football field! Beavercreek begins the season as our area’s top-rated team.

The Fairborn Skyhawks are another area high school team that may have surprised some people on Friday. They faced a Tecumseh squad that had shut them out, 6-0, a year ago, but Fairborn doubled up the Arrows for a 42-21 win. So Fairborn is our no. 2 team after a week’s worth of football.

The Carroll Patriots went on the road to play Meadowdale at Dayton’s Perc Welcome Stadium, and came away with a 45-30 road win to earn our no. 3 ranking.

They may be the defending Ohio Heritage Conference champs, but coach Kasner made it sound as if his Greeneview Rams were in rebuilding mode for this season when we spoke with him for the football preview. Maybe perennial powerhouse Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is the one in rebuilding mode this season, because the Rams handled CHCA on Friday for a 35-28 home win.

The Bellbrook Golden Eagles also claimed a season opening win on Friday. They beat a solid Waynesville team, 26-21 last week and earned our fifth place ranking.

Incidentally, our football poll is a conducted using an incredibly mathematic process which helps us determine the area’s best teams: If you win, and win by the largest points margin, you’re no. 1.

So five of our eight area high school football teams claimed wins over the past weekend. Not too shabby.

The Xenia Buccaneers, Cedarville Indians and Greenon Knights each claimed losses in Week 1.

Week 1 Area Poll

1. Beavercreek (1-0) +38

2. Fairborn (1-0) +21
