Creek tennis edges out Carroll

BEAVERCREEK — The Carroll girls tennis team went into its tennis match Wednesday at Beavercreek undefeated at 4-0. The hosting Beavers were also undefeated at 4-0.

It was the host team who came out on top and remained undefeated when Beavercreek topped the Patriots, 3-1, at Beavercreek High School. The third singles match between Beavercreek’s Vania Jiao and Carroll’s Emily Simons was cut short by rain. Jiao won the tiebreaker in the first set, and Simons led the second set 4-3 before the rain hit.

Beavercreek won the first match of the day when the senior duo of Saima Wase and Rose Almazan defeated Carroll’s Julia Arnold and Consudo Gallegos-Ayala in the second doubles match 6-1, 6-1.

The first singles player for the Patriots, Jillian Milano, evened things back up when she defeated Beavercreek senior Anna Jones 6-3, 6-0.

Carroll coach Greg Milano said that it was the toughest opponent Jillian had faced all season.

“Anna is a very strong, all-around player. She has a solid game.”

Beavercreek’s first doubles team of Adrianne Farwell and Teresa Liu beat Carroll’s Alicia Gallegos-Ayala and Rose Jenkins, putting the pressure on the Simons sisters, Emily and Olivia, to win the day.

Olivia played a tough match against Beavercreek sophomore Esther Hu, losing 6-4, 6-4 to give the Beavers the win. Emily’s match against Jiao was rained out in the second set.

Milano was proud of the Simons sisters for not giving up.

“They scrap really hard. They’re fighters.”

He credited Beavercreek’s depth, and said he is happy Carroll’s program seems to be growing as well.

“The team is bigger than ever. That’s why [Carroll’s] program will thrive. There are a lot of young players who are energized to play tennis.”

Five games into the season, Milano said his team is shaping up nicely. While some players have been knocking off the rust, others have had an easier time getting back into the swing of things.

“The offseason is really what makes a strong tennis season. You need to practice. We only have a week of practice before games start. It’s hard to change a player in one week,” he said.

“Jillian plays all over the Midwest in leagues. The Simons sisters play indoors. It’s not as bad for those types of players. It’s toughest for those who only play during the season.”

The Beavers (5-0) are scheduled to play Loveland High School at 4 p.m. today at Beavercreek High School. According to the school website, Carroll (4-1) will play the Knights at 4 p.m. today at Alter High School.
