DAEGU, South Korea — International race walk competitor Susan Randall, of Beavercreek, earned silver medals in two events at the 2017 World Masters Athletics Championships event March 19-25 near Daegu Stadium.
Randall was among a field of 16 international race walker entered for the 3,000-meter event on Sunday, March 19. Her time of 15 minutes, 8.19 seconds was second only to Olga Cabrera Ysas of Spain, who turned in a time of 14:53.73.
Lenka Borovickova of the Czech Republic was third followed by Maria Guitron Rodriguez of Mexico and Hyun Lye Son of Korea.
Ninety six race walkers were entered in Friday’s March 24 women’s 10-kilometer race walk event. And again, Randall finished second to Spain’s Cabrera Ysas, who covered the roughly 6.2-mile distance in 51:49. Randall was next at 52:09 followed again by Borovickova of the Czech Republic in third with Mexico’s Guitron Rodriguez fourth, France’s Isabelle Lafarque was fifth, Li-Ling Huang of Chinese Taipei finished sixth, Yee Hung Chan of Hong Kong China was seventh with Young Ju Kim of Korea in eighth.
A total of 60 countries competed in the World Masters Athletics Championships. Australia went home with the most medals (124) and the most gold medals (59), followed by Great Britain/Northern Ireland (118 total, 50 gold) and then the United States (108 medals, 42 gold). Spain finished fourth in the medal count with 80 medals and 38 golds. Host Korea and Germany finished in a tie for fifth with 27 gold medals each, but Germany had a slightly higher medal count overall (83, to 65 for the Koreans).
More than 4,000 athletes, aged 35 and over, competed at the World Masters Championships Indoor. The athletes themselves were responsible for their participation expenses of travel, accommodations and entry fees.
Randall will have a few weeks to rest up and train, before she joins up with Team USA for the Pan American Cup race walking event, May 13-14 in Lima, Peru. Randall is entered in the 50-kilometer (30.069 miles) race walking event.
