CLEVELAND — The Wright State women’s basketball team set a program record for league wins in a season Thursday night, rallying from an 11-point second quarter deficit to defeat Cleveland State 65-60 at the Wolstein Center.

CSU used an 11-4 run in the opening period to build a 19-11 advantage and took its biggest lead of the game at 29-18 on an Ashanti Abshaw three with 4:20 remaining in the second stanza.

It was all Raiders the rest of the quarter, however, as they scored the final 10 points, four coming from Symone Simmons, to only trail 29-28 at the halftime break.

Cleveland State maintained its lead throughout the third period and went up 50-43 on back-to-back Chrishna Butler threes to start the final stanza.

Wright State, though, stormed back with 10 consecutive points, half by Chelsea Welch, to take a 53-50 lead with 5:10 to play.

Abshaw tied the game with a three, but the Raiders went ahead to stay with a 6-0 burst, including a pair of free throws by Welch and Mackenzie Taylor.

The Vikings cut the deficit to three on a pair of occasions down the stretch, but WSU sealed the win on two Welch foul shots with 3.7 seconds left.

The win was the 13th for the Raiders in Horizon League play this season, eclipsing the previous program record of 12, first set by the 2011-12 squad and tied in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16.

For the third straight game, Wright State shot under 30 percent from the field at 29 percent, but Cleveland State also struggled at 34 percent.

The Raiders were 24 of 37 at the foul line, including 14 of 19 in the final period, compared to just nine of 11 for the Vikings. WSU also led 20-7 in points off of turnovers and 16-6 in second-chance points.

Welch led all scorers with 25 points, 19 coming after halftime, while Simmons posted her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Taylor added 11 points while Emily Vogelpohl chipped in seven points and eight assists.

Wright State (21-5, 13-1 Horizon), winners of 12 straight and 17 of its last 18, continues its swing through Northeast Ohio at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, with a contest at Youngstown State.
