Bellbrook girls win district title

BELLBROOK — Sydney Hollingsworth scored off an assist from Hailee Adams with eight seconds left to give Bellbrook a 1-0 district final win over Cincinnati Wyoming, Saturday, Oct. 29. The Golden Eagles battled back from an early season four-match winless streak to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2012. Bellbrook plays Cincinnati McNicholas at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Lakota East High School in Liberty Township.

Greeneview blanks Cedarville, makes playoffs

JAMESTOWN — The Greeneview Rams advanced to the playoffs for the third straight season after beating Cedarville, 56-0, on Friday, Oct. 28. The Rams, seeded sixth, visit no. 3 Carlisle at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

In the win over Cedarville, Greeneview scored 21 points in the first and second quarters and then a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters to improve to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the Ohio Heritage Conference. Griffin Mangan scored on runs of 7 and 19 yards and he also caught a 20-yard TD pass from quarterback Collin Matt. Matt (15 yards), Jacob Green (7 yards), Clay Payton (6 yards), and Austin Roberts (5 yards) also had rushing TDs. Roberts also had a 5-yard TD catch.

Cedarville ends the season 0-10, 0-7 in the OHC.

CU soccer team wins 4-1

CEDARVILLE — Joel Twinem scored twice as three-time defending champion Cedarville defeated Kentucky Wesleyan, 4-1, in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament first round on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Twinem got the scoring under way in the 10th minute when he converted a penalty kick after Jon Brown had been tripped up in the penalty area. The senior from Ontario made it 2-0 in the 19th when he scooped up the ball between two Panther defenders and ripped a 25-yarder into the upper corner. Brown assisted Derek Braak’s goal just 16 seconds into the second period. Bryce Childers scored from Aaron Plummer in the 55th minute for a 4-0 bulge. KWC averted the shutout with a tally in the 81st minute. Paulo Pinto played the full 90 minutes and was called upon to make one save.

The no. 3-seed Yellow Jackets, 10-6-2, advance to play no. 2 Ohio Valley (11-5-1) in a semifinal contest on Nov. 3 in Elkins, W.Va. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

CU women’s season ends in overtime

CEDARVILLE — Malone scored in the 98th minute to eliminate the defending champion Lady Jackets, 2-1 in overtime, in the first round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament on Saturday, Oct. 29. Cedarville ends the season at 7-10-1.

The Pioneers, 9-8-2, were awarded free kick approximately 25 yards out. The high shot deflected off the left post and crossed the goal line for the winner prior to spinning back onto the field of play.

Malone held a 1-0 lead at the intermission with a goal in the 21st minute. The Lady Jackets leveled the match in the 56th when Hannah Atkinson slid a through ball to Alyssa Maillefer, who finished it from 15 yards out. Malone out-shot the hosts 17-8 overall and 12-5 on goal. Hanna Harris made 10 saves in her final match between the pipes.

CU victorious in home finale

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville finished the home portion of the volleyball schedule by sweeping aside Kentucky Wesleyan in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match played Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Callan Athletic Center.

The Yellow Jackets were 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 winners to move their record to 19-7 overall and 6-1 G-MAC to assume sole possession of first place. Abby Shelton continued her torrid play with 13 kills and four blocks. Gabby Olson contributed eight kills and three blocks. Rachel Krikke totaled seven kills and five blocks while Taylor Wilkerson chipped in seven kills. Kristin Cardwell had 35 assists with Angela Becker adding 14 digs.

Seniors net big G-MAC victory

CEDARVILLE — Cedarville swept defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference champion Trevecca Nazarene before 855 Senior Night fans in the Callan Athletic Center to tighten up the league race on Friday, Oct. 28. Cedarville took care of the Trojans 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 to improve to 18-7 overall and 5-1 G-MAC en route to winning for the fourth straight time.

TNU, who swept the Jackets in Nashville, Tenn. on Oct. 1, is 15-10 and 7-1 G-MAC. Abby Shelton keyed a balanced attack with 14 kills and 17 digs. Taylor Wilkerson came through with nine kills and six blocks while Rachel Krikke pounded seven kills to go along with six blocks. Kristin Cardwell was good for 36 assists and Angela Becker totaled 16 digs.

Raiders men’s soccer clinches tournament

FAIRBORN — The Wright State men’s soccer team clinched the no. 1 seed for next month’s Horizon League tournament and at least a share of the regular-season title, Saturday, Oct. 29 with a dramatic 2-1 overtime Senior Night victory over Milwaukee at Alumni Field.

WSU Cross Country champs

SOMERS, Wis. — The Wright State women recorded their highest-ever league finish as the cross country teams competed Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Horizon League Championships.

Sophomore Aurora Turner led the way for the Raider women, finishing 13th overall in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 22:39, earning Second Team All-League honors as a results. Joining Turner on the Second Team was senior Alexandra Brown, who placed 14th with a time of 22:58.

The second-place finish for WSU was the highest-ever for the program, eclipsing the third-place finishes in 2001 and 2015. Head coach Rick Williamson was named Horizon League Co-Coach of the Year with Paul Rice of Oakland. On the men’s side, freshman Ryan Dunn set the pace with an 8,000-meter time of 26:21, finishing in 13th place, earning Second Team All-League honors.

Wright State will return to action Friday, Nov. 11, to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals in Madison, Wis.

OAKLAND, Mich. — The Wright State volleyball team dropped a three-set Horizon League decision, Saturday, Oct. 29 at Oakland.

Raider women win exhibition over Urbana

FAIRBORN — The Wright State women’s basketball team scored 30 points in the first quarter in rolling to a 110-60 exhibition win over Urbana on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Wright State Nutter Center.

The Raiders led the entire way as they scored the first six points of the game, four by Lexi Smith, and went up 30-12 after a period, thanks to nine of 18 shooting from the field and hitting 10 of 12 foul shots.

WSU gradually built on the advantage the rest of the way, leading by as much as 102-46 midway through the fourth quarter.

Wright State shot 47 percent from the field, including nine of 22 from three-point range, while Urbana shot 30 percent. The Raiders were 29 of 42 at the stripe and led 34-16 in points in the paint, 23-2 in points off of turnovers and 12-0 in fast-break points.

Chelsea Welch paced the Raiders with 30 points, 24 coming in the first half, and added seven rebounds and five assists while Smith posted a double-double of 24 points and 15 rebounds. Mackenzie Taylor added 22 points and Emily Vogelpohl chipped in 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Wright State opens the regular season 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at Tennessee Tech.

Meet the FHS girls basketball team

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn girls basketball team will be introduced from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Fairborn Baker Middle School Gymnasium. The Fairborn Skyhawks youth basketball teams, Baker Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade teams, Fairborn High School junior varsity and the Fairborn varsity team will all be introduced to the public and will demonstrate their skills. There will be concessions available, a 50/50 raffle, prizes and more.
