XENIA — The rain during Thursday night’s Division II sectional semifinal high school soccer match was intermittent, but Carroll’s offensive pressure was constant in their 5-0 win over Germantown Valley View.

Carroll coach Scott Molfenter felt pretty good about his team’s performance in their postseason debut.

“Yeah, I was pretty proud of the guys. Valley View is a good defensive team, and I thought they had a nice game plan. Fortunately, we were able to get a couple first-half goals and I think that opened the game up a bit,” Molfenter said.

Chris Moon got the Patriots’ scoring under way at the 25:54 mark of the first half. The junior forward was able to drive in close from the right side, then when he found an opening chipped a shot in over a sliding Spartans defender and goalkeeper Caelan Stebelton.

Carroll senior forward Eric Watson zig-zagged his way along the left side between a pair of Valley View defenders and found himself wide open for the second Pats score of the match, with just over 10 minutes to play in the half.

With just over a minute left to play in the half, Watson got off another scoring try off a Carroll corner kick attempt from the left side. His shot was deflected away, but Sean Dosedel was there to knock in the rebound for a 3-0 Patriots halftime lead.

A light-to-steady rain pestered fans and players alike throughout much of the second half. With the rain pouring down, another dose of Dosedel — this time on a low and slippery 30-yard roller — put Carroll out in front, 4-0, with 24:10 left in the match.

Dosedel had a chance at recording his third goal of the night with 15 minutes left to play, but his line-drive blast from about 25 yards away clanged off the crossbar and back into play.

Senior forward Max Haney closed out the Patriots’ scoring with his rebound score off yet another Carroll corner kick opportunity with 8:28 left in the match.

“I was pretty proud of our back line — Mekhi Jones, Sean Dosedel, Justin Dirksen and Eric Watson — I thought they did a nice job for us tonight. They eliminated a lot of chances that Valley View could’ve had, so that was good to see,” Molfenter said.

Zack Fisher played the first half for Carroll (15-1-1) in goal, while Ben Wourms was in the nets for the second half. Thursday’s win marked the Patriots’ 11th shutout of the season.

Veteran Valley View coach Devin Stoutenborough said that the match was a good experience for his relatively youthful Spartans team.

“Carroll’s got a good solid program. They’re a state Final Four caliber team nearly every year. We’re really young. We’re graduating five guys, but we have 13 freshmen and sophomores on our tournament team,” he said. “So this was a good experience for us to play a top-quality team. Five-zero games aren’t anything to brag about, but with the weather conditions and how young we are, I think this is the kind of game we needed to be in.”

Valley View closes its season with an 8-9-1 overall record.

The Carroll win sets up a sectional final match against the winner of Thursday night’s other sectional semifinal — either third-seeded Tipp City Tippecanoe or no. 5 Bellbrook. That final is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Xenia’s Doug Adams Stadium.

Molfenter has his Patriots practicing on the Athletes In Action soccer field both Saturday and Sunday in order to get further acclimated to playing on artificial turf. Doug Adams Stadium has artificial turf.
