Greeneview volleyball wins again

JAMESTOWN — Caitlin Sweat had nine kills and Jenna Basinger added 17 digs to lead Greeneview to a hard-fought 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-7 volleyball win over London Madison Plains, Sept. 6. Brianna Seigfried had 22 assists and Maddie Hines added six kills.

The reserve team won 25-13, 25-19.

Franklin outswings Bellbrook

BELLBROOK — Raif Foster shot a match-low 37 at Sugar Valley Country Club as Bellbrook beat Franklin, 165-199, in a Southwestern Buckeye League golf match Sept. 6. Bellbrook had the top five finishers including Mason Zimmer (38), Luke DiCicco (44), William Martin (46), and Sean Ulrich (46).

Miami Valley tops Greeneview

JAMESTOWN — Greeneview’s girls soccer team lost, 1-0, to Miami Valley, Sept. 6. The Rams are 2-2-1 overall.

Bellbrook ties Valley View

BELLBROOK — Bailey Sedlak scored off an assist from Cassidy Bereda as Bellbrook tied Valley View, 1-1, in a girls soccer match Sept. 6. The reserve team won, 2-0.

Fairborn loses to Greenville

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn girls tennis team finished its run through the Greater Western Ohio League’s American North Division, losing 5-0 to Greenville, Sept. 6.

Brooklyn Hunter lost, 4-6, 0-6, at first singles; Acadia Wulf lost, 1-6, 0-6, at second singles; and Kyla Secrest lost, 1-6, 2-6, at third singles.

Preslee Chapman and Shayna Osborne lost, 3-6, 5-7, at first doubles; and Dakota Thacker and Megan Koonce lost, 0-6, 0-6, at second singles.

Fairborn is 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the GWOC American South.

“We had higher expectations for this season than we’ve been able to accomplish up to this point,” coach Doug Coy said.

Bellbrook runner sets PR

BELLBROOK — Bellbrook cross country runner Justin Boreman ran a personal-best 16:49.2, Sept. 3 at the Miamisburg Cross Country Invitational. It was his first time running in less than 17 minutes. He finished 16th overall as Bellbrook finished sixth in the 25-team race. The Bellbrook girls were 10th out of 20 teams, led by Minami Ford, who ran in 21:14.3 to finish 31st.

Ruff recognized

FAIRBORN — Senior goalkeeper Katie Ruff of the Wright State women’s soccer team has been named as the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 5, it was announced Sept. 6 by the league office.

Ruff recorded two shutouts last week as the Raiders picked up their first two wins of the season. In a 2-0 decision on Friday, Sept. 2 at Saint Francis, Pa., Ruff had five saves, while in a 1-0 victory Sunday, Sept. 4 over Fort Wayne at Alumni Field, she posted seven saves. On the season, Ruff leads the league with 35 saves and is tied for the league lead with the two shutouts.

Wright State (2-4) heads to Nashville for a pair of nonleague matches this weekend, facing Belmont 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 and Lipscomb 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

G-MAC recognizes Esbenshade

CEDARVILLE — Lady Jacket senior Olivia Esbenshade is the first G-MAC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for 2016. Esbenshade, a senior from Marietta, Pa., placed 12th in the Queen City Invitational. Her time in the 6K was 22:22.The mark is the ninth-fastest in Great Midwest Athletic Conference history.

Cedarville, ranked No. 25 in the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association Division II preseason poll, was the runner-up in the nine-team field to Ohio State. The Jackets defeated NCAA Division I members Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Wright State, and Xavier. Cedarville will host the 26th Annual Friendship Invitational on Sept. 17 with the women’s race at 10:15 a.m. EDT.

Raiders volleyball wins

MOREHEAD, Ky. — After dropping the opening set, the Wright State volleyball team hit an impressive .330 the rest of the way in defeating Morehead State in four Sept. 6 games at Wetherby Gym. They won 3-1 with game one 18-25, game two, 25-16, game three, 25-22 and game four, 25.16. Player of the match was Alannah Lemming.

Michalski Athlete of the Week

CEDARVILLE — Daniel Michalski has been selected the G-MAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week. The junior from Xenia was the individual runner at the University of Dayton 5K Challenge in the team’s season opener. Michalski was timed in 15:20 at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering – trailing the winner by just five seconds. His mark is a new G-MAC record.

The Yellow Jackets placed fourth out of eight schools. The only schools to beat them were NCAA Division I members Ohio, Dayton, and Louisville. Cedarville will host the 26th Annual Friendship Invitational on Sept. 17 with the men’s race at 9:30 a.m. EDT.

Cedarville wins at Urbana

URBANA — Gabby Olson pounded a career-high 18 kills while Krissy Pratt and Abby Shelton added 10 each as the Cedarville University volleyball Yellow Jackets won a non-conference match Sept. 6 at Urbana.

Cedarville rallied for a 19-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-19 victory to improve to 3-2 with its third straight decision. The key set was the third. The Jackets trailed by six points early and still faced deficits of 23-20 and 26-25. Pratt and Shelton each provided kills as CU scored the final three points to claim the set. The Jackets totaled 26 block assists. Olson turned aside seven, Rachel Krikke had six, and Taylor Wilkerson added five. Pratt came up with 13 digs and Kristin Cardwell racked up 38 assists.

Holt has Top-5 showing

BLACKLICK — Taylor Holt shot 74-73 to tie for fourth place to lead the Yellow Jackets golf team in their season opener at the Ohio Dominican Kickoff Classic. The one-day 36-hole tournament was played Sept. 6 at the Jefferson Country Club.

Cedarville totaled 318-315-633 to place ninth of 12 schools. Indianapolis cruised to a 22-shot victory with 295-288-583. John Sandlas carded 81-77-158 while Jordan Reese had 77-82-159. Carter Ehms turned in 87-83-170 and Hayden James carded 86-90-176. Three players were entered as individuals: Jeremy Royer (80-84-164), Jared Hoelzen (83-84-167), and Jacob Adams (88-90-178).

XENIA — The Xenia Tornadoes semi-professional football team will hold a tryout for its 2017 team at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Spring Hill Park, located just off Ormsby Drive. Tryouts are free, make sure you bring water cleats and shorts. Tryouts will consist of agility drills, route running, and more.
