Remembering Carl E. Smith

SPRING VALLEY — Carl Smith was raised in Spring Valley. He taught school for several years, and was a breeder of basset hounds. His book on training the basset hound was well read by dog owners. I addition to his many other interests, he was a poet and author. Nearing his 90th birthday, he wrote a poem “What is it like to be Ninety?” Each year, he added a new poem as he neared 99. His poem “Low Green Tent” was perhaps his favorite. Mr. Smith was named Ohio Poet Laureate in 1983.

Historical brief provided by Joan Baxter.
