XENIA – Miss Etta McElwain was the first librarian to be hired in the City of Xenia. She was appointed in May of 1888 when the library was located on Greene Street in the YMCA. She served as librarian until the county library system was adopted on 1926 then continued to be a member of the staff for the Greene County District Library. During her 50 years of service she saw the library grow from a small institution serving a limited number of paying members to a thriving public library serving the entire county. She died the same year she retired, 1939.
