Are you an area high school student who loves sports?

Do you consider the field of sports journalism as a possible vocation?

Would you like to gain valuable experience as a deadline reporter?

Better yet, would you like to attend area high school and college sporting events for free?

If you answered an emphatic “Yes” to those questions, Greene County Newspapers and Civitas Media would like to hear from you. We need student reporters to send in results from the area high school sporting events.

We cover 10 area high schools — (listed alphabetically) Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Carroll, Cedarville, Fairborn, Greeneview, Greenon, and Xenia, Xenia Christian, and Yellow Springs.

For the Fall Prep Sports season, we’ll cover boys golf, boys soccer, cross country, football, girls golf, girls soccer, girls tennis and girls volleyball. (Xenia Christian and Yellow Springs do not have football teams.)

The ideal situation would be for us to have one or two student reporters from each school.

Our hope is to provide the best area high school coverage possible, and quite honestly we simply do not have the staff to cover everything.

Your game reports should have the following items:

* The final score (and who won).

* Who scored and when (first and last names, please).

* Where the game took place.

* The teams’ records (overall and league records).

* Where the teams play next.

That’s it! Quotes from players and coaches are not necessary.

Reports would run approximately three to four paragraphs in length. Spelling accuracy (especially players’ names) is a must. Interested students must be in good standing with their school, and must have a reliable way of sending the information to us by 9:30 p.m. on the night of the event.

Texting or emailing stories is preferred.

Travel is not necessary. We’ll stick to home game coverage, for now.

Depending on your schools’ location, reports would run in the Xenia Gazette and Fairborn Daily Herald daily newspapers, as well as the Sugarcreek Bellbrook Times and the Beavercreek News-Current weekly newspapers. Story reports will also run on our newspapers’ websites, Twitter feeds and Facebook pages.

We’ll provide any neccesary editing and tutelage that may be needed. You will receive a byline for each of your reports.

Colleges are always looking for students who participate in an array of extra-curricular activities. Having deadline reporting experience while working for a Pulitzer Prize winning media organization would be a definite plus!

If you have an interest in being a student sports reporter, please contact Sports Editor John Bombatch at: jbombatch@civitasmedia.com, or by phone at 937-372-4444, Ext. 131.
