DAYTON — Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz has been named senior rabbi at Temple Israel in Dayton and will become it’s new spiritual leader July 1.

Bodney-Halasz, 41, becomes the first female senior rabbi in the history of Temple Israel, a reform Jewish congregation that dates back to 1850. She was unanimously recommended by the synagogue’s search committee after a nine-month search. The board of directors approved the recommendation Jan. 27.

“Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz possesses the attributes and skills that Temple Israel members identified as most desired in our next senior rabbi,” the search committee wrote in a memo to the board. “She demonstrates a strong commitment to Jewish education, social justice, interfaith collaboration and outlooks for Jewish identity and expression. We look forward to working with, and supporting her as our next senior rabbi at Temple Israel.”

Bodney-Halasz was ordained as a rabbi in 2007 and has served Temple Israel as rabbi-educator from the time of her ordination until July 2015, at which time she was named associate rabbi.

“It is an honor to be chosen as Temple Israel’s new senior rabbi and I am excited to lead this long-established congregation into the future,” Bodney-Halasz said. “The robust history of Temple Israel inspires my leadership as I position myself to move this community from strength to strength, providing Jewish education for people of all faiths and affiliations, and finding new ways to engage our long-time members.”
