I made four new friends the other day.
I was sitting in my kitchen finishing my breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast when they showed up in my back yard.
It was a dark, dingy and rain-drippy day – one of those days when you don’t expect anything really neat to happen- when all of a sudden they zoomed in for a landing.
They were two bright-colored ducks and it didn’t take them long to start wolfing down the bird seeds in my feeder that dangles from a tree just beyond my kitchen window.
They seemed to be having a great time enjoying the goodies in my bird feeder and I suddenly realized I was having a heckuva lot of fun watching them do it. One was a female, the other a male and they were clearly having a good time as they enjoyed their breakfast.
As for me, I had nothing better to do so I put down my newspaper and started watching them eat.
Five, maybe 10 minutes into the show they were putting on just for me, I realized I was having a lot of fun watching it. That’s when I had another idea.
I decided it would be fun to name my new friends.
I had never named ducks before.
I’ve named dogs and cats and a hamster or two but not ducks. So there I was on a weekday morning sitting in late winter or early spring, if you insist, I was sitting at my breakfast table sipping my coffee and watching a couple of ducks cavorting about in my yard.
Ten minutes later I had ANOTHER brilliant idea.
Brilliant ideas don’t come to me very often so maybe that’s when I decided one of them looked enough like Donald Duck to get the name “Donald” and the female was a dead ringer for “Daisy.”
