XENIA — Hillside Assisted Living is celebrating 30 years in Xenia at its annual resident, family and staff picnic July 5.

Started as Hillside Retirement Home in 1984 by Drs. Robert Henderson and Eugene Schmitt, the home has 26 residents with 60 percent being veterans. Located in the old McClellan Hospital at 130 Rogers St., the business is owned by Jim and Marylou Preston, who were originally hired by the doctors to live on-site and run Hillside.

Dr. Henderson is deceased, but Dr. Schmitt and family have been invited to attend the picnic, held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. under the large pavilion at Shawnee Park. Magician Edwin McDonald will provide entertainment. Organizers expect approximately 100 people to attend.
