XENIA — Greene County fourth and fifth graders have been invited by Greene County Children Services to participate in an art contest which is part of the agency’s annual Child Abuse Prevention Campaign.

All Greene County public schools that include these two grade levels were invited to participate; those that accepted the invitation have received information and/or presentations from Children Services staff on the theme of the contest, “It Takes a Community to Protect a Child.”

“We feel that it’s just as important to educate children about child abuse and neglect as it is to educate adults,” said Amy Amburn, Administrator for Greene County Children Services, a division of the Greene County Department of Job and Family Services. “Through the art contest and our school presentations, we encourage children to watch out for each other and tell a trusted adult if something doesn’t seem right.”

Winning artwork will be featured in a calendar to be published and distributed by Greene County Children Services. Twelve winning pieces of art will be featured inside the calendar, and the grand prize winner’s art will appear on the calendar’s cover. Each winner will receive a monetary prize as will each winner’s teacher. Prize levels range from $25 to $50 all the way up to $100 for the grand prize winner.

Contest winners will be announced in April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Greene County Children Services is a division of the Greene County Department of Job & Family Services and provides for the care, protection and placement of abused, neglected and dependent children in Greene County. The agency engages in a wide spectrum of protective activities including the assessment of thousands of child abuse and neglect reports received each year. It also provides preventive services to children in their own homes as well as providing temporary and permanent child placement through foster care, adoption, group home and independent living programs.
