“There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” (Isaiah 57:21)

Promises or realities come in all forms from God. Here is a reality that humankind must face. Rebellion against God will not bring meaningful life. Wickedness is not rewarded and will not bring peace physically, mentally or spiritually. When God is left out of one’s life it will be a ruin. God and wickedness are incompatible. Thus, the peace that passes understanding that comes from God is only for those who received the grace of His presence.

This simple sentence says much about humankind’s situation. Things will not go well for the person who looks for meaning outside of God. Wickedness is outside of God and all our thoughts, words and deeds that are sinful only add to a disturbed life. They do not, they cannot bring the peace that we so desire. It is only by the mercy of God’s grace that we are able to experience peace, through the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. We are sinful, wicked and unclean. There is no peace within us but God has had mercy on us and given us that peace that does pass all our understanding. That peace is knowing that we are His and that He is present in our life. We now live that peace because Jesus has given us His righteousness and taken our wickedness on the Cross. Alleluia!

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy in Christ Jesus, Your Son. Thank You for the peace that You provide us in life. Thank You for the meaning You give us as You lead us to do Your work. Thank You for Your forgiveness that conquers our wickedness. Thank You for Your Spirit who fills us with peace and new life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
