FAIRBORN – Ten academic buildings at Wright State University were evacuated Monday due to an acid spill in a laboratory.

According to school officials, the evacuations took place as a precaution after acetic acid was spilled in the basement of Oelman Hall at 9:50 a.m. June 23. Students and staff were led outside to safety and were later relocated to the Student Union.

“We acted swiftly and took several measures to protect our students and employees, as their health and safety is our top priority,” Wright State President David R. Hopkins stated in a media release Monday afternoon.

The evacuated buildings included Medical Sciences, Biological Sciences I & II, Dunbar Library, Library Annex, Allyn Hall, Millett Hall, Oelman Hall, Fawcett Hall, Diggs Laboratory and Brehm Lab. The spill did not affect any outside areas.

The university later closed the buildings and cancelled all classes and activities for the day effective at 1:30 p.m. All the tunnels that connect to the buildings were also shut down.

Hazmat teams assisted with ventilating the buildings, and employees and staff were able to re-enter at 2 p.m. to collect belongings. These buildings will remain closed until Tuesday morning.

Officials said no students were injured. Two Wright State University police officers received minor injuries responding to the incident, suffering airway and eye irritation. One officer was transported to Soin Medical Center as a precaution. Both officers were treated and released.

The rest of the university remains open and activities unaffected by the building closures will continue as scheduled.
