XENIA — For the fourth straight year, Nick’s deep fried the competition at the Kickin’ Chicken Wing Fest.

The restaurant won the People’s Choice Award for best chicken wing at the event at Fraze Pavilion in Kettering. Attendees picked Nick’s over Greene County brethren Pies and Pints and Romer’s Bar and Grill and several others.

“They said we have the quintessential real, deep fried, crunchy even with the sauce on, chicken wing,” said Nick’s Manager Cathy Spurgeon. “We have bigger than usual wings. The sauce really makes it. We make everything ourselves except for the regular plain old barbecue sauce.”

The Sweet Hot Damn was the popular choice, followed by the Sweet Bourbon BBQ. New creation General Zen also did well.

Despite the recent run of victories, Spurgeon said she and owner, Marc Perkins, weren’t overly confident this year.

“It was really stiff competition,” she said. “We were promoting it and hoping and keeping our fingers crossed. Halfway through the competition we saw the people coming back through the line telling us ours were definitely the best wings they had there.”

Now comes the fun part for Nick’s, 1443 N. Detroit St., — a boom in business.

“We get a huge pickup on people that have never been here before,” Spurgeon said. “They come out and give us a try and most of them become regular customers. I had someone from Michigan that was here to visit friends and they said they had to stop in and try them. They loved them. They said they’ll be back the next time they’re in town.”

Pies and Pints, located at The Greene was voted best wings by a panel of judges. Romer’s was second in the people’s choice.
