XENIA — The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Greene County has announced its scholarship award winners for Greene County high school seniors graduating in 2014. Each will enter The Ohio State University in August.

Scholarship winners selected from Greene County are Matthew Hiser of Greeneview; Kelsey Elam, Rachel McClellan and Sarah Young of Xenia; David Giffin and Shelby Powers of Bellbrook; Michael Chu of Beavercreek who graduated from Carroll and Samantha Carlin and Duncan Titus of Beavercreek. Each scholarship is for $1,000.

The awards are funded by the support of local alumni. John and Cindy Feltz of Fairborn and Eric and Lela Marcus of Beavercreek are due special thanks for their generosity in setting up endowments in addition to the club’s initial endowment fund. The funds from these endowments generate earnings to enable the local club to offer more scholarships for Greene County students.

Scholarship applications are distributed to all Greene County high school counselors in the fall of each school year and then qualifying applicants are interviewed to select the merit-based award winners. Members serving on the Scholarship Interview Committee this year were Steve Lamb, James Root, Ron Stauffer, Larry Lokai, and chairperson Christi Guillmen.

Scholarship recipients and their parents were recently honored at an alumni gathering held in Fairborn with more than 50 people attending. Past scholarship recipients in attendance included Casey Gayheart of Fairborn and Hallie Sue Hiser of Jamestown.

Bernie Savarese, director of orientation and first-year experience at The Ohio State University was the guest speaker. He provides leadership to maximize the success and retention of new students at OSU and provides leadership for undergraduate admissions and the Office of Enrollment Services.

The local club also elected officers for the 2014-2015 year. Officers re-elected for the 2014-2015 year were John Balmer, president; Ron Stauffer, first vice-president; Steve Lamb, second vice-president; Connie Moser, secretary; and Chuck Moser, treasurer. Board of Governors representatives include: Tom Adinaro, Karen French Balmer, Anita Byler, Rod Byler, Christi Guillmen and Eric Marcus of Beavercreek; James Root, Bill Buckey and Cindy Feltz of Fairborn; Lynn Bender of Washington Township; and Susan Brainard of Bellbrook.
