XENIA — It’s an ongoing program but it is a heartwarming story for the holidays.

The women inmates at the Dayton Correctional Institution used their talents with yarn to good use, crocheting and knitting gloves, hats and more for the residents of Elmcroft of Xenia Assisted Living Facilities.

Jeff Lisath, warden of DCI, said this is a great program for his people.

“Our offenders look forward to doing this every year,” Lisath said. “This is our fifth year and it gets better every year.”

Santa Claus, aka Cedric Tolbert Sr., and Cedric Tolbert Jr. were on hand to help Lisath pass out the crafted gifts to the the residents.

“Everyone gets a gift,” Cedric Claus said. “We want everyone to have a happy holiday. We’ve done this in other areas, too, around Dayton, but I’m from Xenia and I wanted to do something here.”

Tonya Leonard, the Healthy Lifestyles Director at Elmcroft, said it’s wonderful for the residents.

“They come in and are so nice and give everyone something that brightens their day,” she said.

The facility is home for some 107 residents.
