The Xenia Community School Board has received the “Gold Level” Effective School Board Award for this year.

This is the highest rating possible. Board members will be recognized at the OSBA Southwest Region event March 8. Congratulations to board President Bill Spahr, board Vice-President Gilberto Esparza, and board members Pam Callahan, Robert Dillaplain and Cheryl Marcus.

Community forum: Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, for a community forum at Xenia High School. As the district considers current and future facility needs and potential opportunities available through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, it is essential that we gather input from our parents, residents, and other community stakeholders to help shape plans for Xenia Community Schools. Feb. 29 will be the first in a series of community forums to be held over the next several months where we will share information and ask for feedback from the community. Additional opportunities through other methods will be incorporated throughout the process for the community to share their thoughts, questions and input. We look forward to active involvement from the community in this important planning process and hope you will help us in spreading the word.

XTAR: The Pi and Infinity classes completed a brain tickler/logic puzzle. The students were introduced to a new problem, trail mix. The students worked individually first and then partnered up to compare solutions. With their partners, the students completed a rubric that helped them evaluate how well they solved the math story problem. Everyone used at least two problem solving strategies. The students were asked to construct an “area robot.” Students also worked in multiplication stations. They worked and solved problems in order to compete against one another. The Patterns/Equations class reviewed problem-solving strategies in their journals and attempted a new problem of the day. Students also completed multiplication stations and graphed progress on their math fact fluency chart. The AR Group spent time in their stations. The stations are Art Contest, Logic Puzzles, Boggle, Banking and Bill Pay, Pentomino Puzzles, and Bird Mosaic. The students then worked on their math problem of the day and did research by doing The Amazing Race Wworksheet.

Warner update: The Warner Middle School National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony will be taking place 6:3- p.m. Wednesday, Feb, 24. A total of 43 seventh-graders and three eighth-graders will be included.

XHS news: Congratulations to the staff and students of XHS on the first week of fund-raising toward Leukemia/Lymphoma research. The $974 raised the first week will go toward a needed cause, but the concept of constantly asking students to think and feel good about donating to a purpose builds good citizenship, values and character. Kudos to Greene County Career Center students Andrew Powers, Micah Gates, Taylor Grooms, Andrew Worthington, Nathan Dale, Eric Flinn, and Austin Stephens. These students from the International Business and Finance and Information Technology programs all did very well in the Business Professionals of America Region 15 Leadership Conference and now head on to the State Leadership Conference in Columbus.

Air camp: Air Camp summer sessions are June 12-17, June 19-24, and July 17-22. This camp is open to students entering grades 7, 8, and 9 in the fall. Students will have the opportunity to take flight training and fly as a co-pilot, learn the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that propel aviation, design an aircraft, plan an air rescue mission, and fly a remotely piloted air vehicle. For more information go to aircampusa.com.

National Museum of the United States Air Force Family Days: Today you can learn more about astronomy and satellites while celebrating the anniversary of the first GPS satellite. Go and enjoy the exciting free educational programs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
