Xenia recognizes Learning Disabilities Month

0

October is Learning Disabilities Month. It is important during LDA Month to focus less on the disabilities aspect and focus more on the incredible abilities so many of these individuals possess as well as emphasize the phenomenal achievements and important strides so many of these individuals have made.

United Way campaign: The United Way Campaign is underway and will continue through Oct. 16. If you would like your contribution taken directly from your payroll, it would begin Oct. 23. Please send completed applications, along with any checks to Jenni Arnett at central office. Please be generous.

Kids of Character winners: Congratulations to each of our young people who were recognized at the September Board of Education Meeting. The students do their best all the time. They look for ways to help others. They are proud members of our Xenia Community City School family. Winners were Christopher Motzel from the Xenia Preschool, Nate Fellie from Arrowood, Tori McPherson from Cox, Jaxen Lewis from McKinley, Kylie Hart from Shawnee, Gunnar Stephan from Tecumseh, Tyra Goins from Warner and Donna Cook from the High School. Congratulations to each of these young people. We are so proud of you.

Arrowood information: Arrowood students participated in their first PBiS event last week. Students had a great time participating in the Fall Buccaneer Bash where they danced, ran a scarecrow relay, participated in an apple relay and competed fall themed arts and crafts. A huge thanks to the entire Arrowood staff for setting the tone early for an exceptional year. The Arrowood All-Stars program was established to recognize students who consistently do their best, are responsible and respectful, and make Arrowood a better place. Congratulations to September Arrowood All Stars: Keegan Houser, Jade Gaffney, Kameron Williams, Felicity Hammerstrom, Kaitlyn Avey, Abigail Tuck, Noah Myers, Greta Freed, Angel Marie Lannon, Colton Brown, Carson Baker, Abby Puttin, Jaelyn Moore, Ian Waggoner, Hannah Faul, Kaydence Keeton, Neveah Cunningham, Amil Moore, Isaac Rapp, Evan Harbison, Corbin Brown, Phoebe Eldridge and Nate Fellie.

Cox literacy night: Cox has a Literacy Night planned Oct. 14. The theme is Fall into Reading. They will have several stations with fall themes including face painting, painting pumpkins, making a leaf man, and bookmarks. They will also have a table set up where the students and the parents will be able to choose a free book. They will also be playing videos of performances that each grade level did for reader’s theater.

Shawnee news: The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company visited Shawnee last Friday. DCDC is a culturally diverse contemporary dance company that is noted in the African-American experience. Students enjoyed an exciting, energetic, athletic, and educational presentation. The demonstration included narration and entertaining excerpts from the DCDC repertory. Students were able to participate and ask questions which inspired them about learning, creativity, and the appreciation of dance.

Tecumseh news: Last Thursday Tecumseh held a literacy/math fest. The PTO provided a baked pasta dinner from One Bistro ahead of the event attended by more than 200. I had the pleasure of being a guest reader along with Sabrina Woodruff and Dena Doolin and we had a great time. Students learned at many different activities including a book swap, a book walk, BAOTAT, math olympics, logical thinking, estimation and measuring. Kylie Abbott won the grand prize of the Kindle Fire and the winners of the baskets were Spencer Crowe, Conner Kostrzewa, Winter Birdsong and Declan Cook. Congratulations to staff member Jason Hoffman who passed his RESA. Way to go Jason! This month Tecumseh focused on the trait of responsibility. Congratulations to Isaac Hall, Zoee Richards, Owen Smith, Eli Muterspaw, Jenavieve Grooms, Madison Mapp, Matthew Van Dyne, Annabelle Caldwell, Ailana Peyton, Devin Siebel, Gabe Muterspaw, Kasaun Singleton, and Alia Donofrio for being named Kids of Character this month.

Kiwanis presentation: This past week Xenia Preschool Principal Josh Newport spoke to the Kiwanis Club. He told about the tremendous growth of the preschool, the Five Star highest rating possible, and about its mission to service children in the Xenia community. He spoke about how last year the preschool had 167 students and now has more than 220 young people. After he concluded his presentation, the club members toured the building. Many were former teachers and administrators who shared stories about the building, which was fun to hear.

Warner Middle School update: This past week the Muse Machine students experienced performer Michael Kelsey. Kelsey is an incredible guitarist who has performed all over the country and played with Eric Clapton, Santana, and B.B. King. It was truly an outstanding performance. Warner students still have the opportunity to join Muse Machine and view the remaining three performances as well as have the opportunity to attend out of school performances in Dayton and to be part of the fine arts workshops as well. Teachers Justin Shirley and Dana McClain have their seventh grade student leadership class creating happy locker notes for the seventh grade hallways. Students have each been asked to find five happy or inspirational quotes to print out and decorate for student lockers. Eighth grader Miranda Gilbert, and sixth grader Leah Pagett were the winners of the September PBiS drawing for Kings Island passes. Thank you to the Xenia Nazarene Church for sponsoring this drawing.

XHS: Thursday junior biotechnology students of Molly Wavra went to WPAFB for the Scanning Electron Microscope Educational Seminar (SEMEDS). Students heard an introduction to using STEM from base scientists and have the chance to use the SEM and print pictures for their keeping. On Friday the students participated in the Medical Bioscience Junior Career Exploration Day at Sinclair. This week was Homecoming Week. A pep rally took place Friday afternoon. The Homecoming Dance is Saturday evening and the theme is “A Night on Cloud Nine.” In week five of the football season, Xenia High School earned a $300 scholarship in the Goodwill Stores Drive to Victory competition. This is a friendly competition between two local high schools that battle off the field in a donation drive benefiting Goodwill Easter Seals in Miami Valley. Items collected will be sold in Goodwill Stores with proceeds supporting the mission of helping people with disabilities and other needs here in our community. Thanks to Mark Stoll and Jeff Keadle for setting up this event this year. The High School’s Smile Award winners for the month were Anna Dabe, James Green, Tiffany Baker and Francy Lloreda Duatt.
