Air Camp coming to WSU

FAIRBORN — Air Camp will hold three sessions this summer in the Dayton region for middle school students, who are coming from across the country.

More than 130 students were selected to participate in an intensive week of activities, encompassing aviation disciplines such as aircraft design, testing and operations, unmanned aerial vehicle orientations and the ultimate thrill of piloting an airplane. Wright State University is the host campus for the three one-week camp sessions: June 12 to 17, June 19 to 24, and July 17 to 22.

Air Camp introduces students to the wonders of flight, with hands-on exposure to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) of aviation and aeronautics.

Highlights include:

•Taking flight-simulator training at Sinclair Community College’s aviation school and piloting an airplane at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport.

•Experiencing the physics of flight and the new wing of the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

•Touring the air traffic control tower and viewing operations at Dayton International Airport.

•Understanding the challenges of providing on-scene medical care using paramedic equipment including a smart-state medical manikin.

•Touring Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

•Discovering the history of flight at Carillon Park.

•Viewing worldwide flight patterns at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

“Air Camp inspires middle school students to develop a passion for the STEM fields by exploring these subjects as they apply to aviation and aeronautics,” said Shannon Coblenz, Air Camp director of operations. “They learn the science and evolution of flight, take the controls during an actual flight under the guidance of a certified pilot instructor and collaborate with their peers in immersive activities at unique aviation sites throughout the Dayton area.”

Air Camp supports education in the science, technology, engineering and math of aviation and aeronautics, designed to inspire middle school students, through in-residence, week-long summer camps and educator workshops. Air Camp is a not-for-profit organization supported by donations from educational institutions, foundations, businesses and individuals.
