New trash carts coming soon

XENIA — Rumpke and the city of Xenia will begin their automated trash service the week of June 13.

The new service features trucks with arms that automatically extend out and pick up the trash containers and dump the waste into the truck. Residents will receive new 95-gallon trash carts beginning the week of June 6. Residents will be able to continue to use their current recycling cart and those who don’t recycle and wish to will be able to receive a cart as well.

The goal is to eliminate trash-lined streets and reduce excessive landfill disposal fees.

With the new trash removal come some changes, which were highlighted in a series of mailings to residents.

The biggest change is that trash and recycling carts must be placed within two feet of the curb, facing the street (wheels facing away), and should be a minimum of four feet between each cart and between other objects (mailboxes, parked vehicles, etc.).

This is necessary to allow the mechanical arms to function properly.

“It’s going to take some time for folks to get used to,” City Manager Brent Merriman said during last week’s city council meeting.

Other changes:

— All trash must be placed inside the carts. Waste left outside the carts will not be collected.

— Up to three bulk items will be collected the second full week of each month, the same day as normal trash collection. Upholstered items must be wrapped in plastic.

— Additional trash and recycling carts can be rented for $4 per month.
