MAD RIVER TOWNSHIP — It’s spring cleanup time again, and the 17th annual Great American Cleanup is underway through March 31 in the Village of Enon and Mad River Township.

Spearheaded by Keep America Beautiful, the Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest community improvement program that takes place in more than 20,000 communities each spring.

The local cleanup program, which is sponsored each year by the Clark County Waste Management District and the Ohio Environmental Agency (EPA), encourages village and township residents to rid their communities of trash and litter, while beautifying public outdoor spaces, according to Linda Mitchell, GAC Assistant.

“We are looking for school, church, and civic groups, youth organizations, athletic teams, and co-workers to form teams and participate in the cleanup this year,” Mitchell told residents during the March 7 Mad River Township meeting.

Mitchell explained that teams can take part in the program by selecting a park, playground, school ground, roadway or other public area to clean. Keep Clark County Beautiful will provide trash bags and gloves for each volunteer, plus disposal of trash, if needed.

“It’s not just your home and yard that is in need of spring cleaning. Your community needs a little spring cleaning too,” said Mitchell.

Also as part of the community cleanup effort this year, the Clark County Solid Waste Management District will supply a cleanup trailer from March 15 through Nov. 15 to residents who want to participate in a community improvement project. Supplies include lawn mowers, rakes, shovels, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, pruning shears and brooms.

“We will provide fuel, trash bags, gloves and safety equipment for the project, and we will deliver and pick up the trailer as well,” said Mitchell. “Your group does the cleanup and then packs up the equipment.

Mitchell noted that the portable tool trailer is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and can be used only in Clark County for a maximum of three days. Each group must have a minimum of five volunteers and a delegated coordinator who is ultimately responsible for ensuring the proper use of the trailer and equipment. A $25 deposit fee is required and will be refunded upon the completion of a one-page cleanup report.

Groups or organizations wanting to help in the effort to keep their community clean and beautiful can sign up by contacting Mitchell at 937-521-2023 or [email protected].

Those individuals wanting to reserve the tool trail are asked to contact Steve Schlather at 937-521-2022 or email [email protected].
