XENIA — Retired Air Force Colonel Jay Strayer had a few extra dollars laying around and wished to help his community. Therefore, he donated $50,000 worth of stock to 4 Paws For Ability in Xenia.

It started with some research on his end and will dually serve as a means of memorializing his late wife.

“I’m a veteran and they train dogs for vets; they also train dogs to help handicap kids,” Strayer said. “They’re local and they do good work.”

Strayer, along with his daughter Christy Britt, will see the unveiling of two cast bronze plaques Saturday that were created in memory of their late wife/mother, Barbara “Jill” Strayer, whom they lost five years ago.

According to 4 Paws for Ability, Strayer received naming rights after his donation and selected its veterinarian area to exercise such — 4 Paws’s exam room and surgical suit.

The Strayer’s were dog lovers and at one point owned a German Shephard who traveled with them across seas, although it was difficult for the Strayer’s, a military family, to keep a dog. Strayer, a Xenia resident, said the donation served as a means of helping his local community.

“It’s a good way to memorialize my wife and her mother,” Strayer said. “She was a good woman.”
