FAIRBORN — Citizens of Fairborn will see a new firefighter/paramedic serving the community, as City Manager Deborah McDonnell swore in its newest individual to join the entity, Matthew Pugh, Monday, Oct. 26.

Pugh graduated Butler High School in 2004 and joined the Ohio Air National Guard. He received his firefighting certifications in 2005 from the Department of Defense Academy in San Angelo, Texas. In 2007, Pugh was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq. It was after this deployment that he sought to obtain his paramedic certification, which he received from Sinclair Community College prior to being deployed again in 2011 to Balad, Iraq.

“I knew that I wanted to be a firefighter and paramedic after my first tour,” Pugh said. “I’m really excited to be here and for having this opportunity.”

Pugh’s father, Bob, has been a firefighter/paramedic for the past 16 years, and his younger brother, Ryne, is currently in school to follow his footsteps.

Prior to his hire, Pugh worked for the Butler Township Fire Department as a part-time firefighter/paramedic from 2009 through 2012, and also worked part-time for a year for the City of Clayton. He was then promoted to a full-time fire fighter/paramedic for Butler Township in late 2012, where he has been working prior to coming to Fairborn.
