YELLOW SPRINGS – The world of the carny, the gypsy, the fairy, the whirling dancer – these are the places Sharri Phillips explores in her art. Working with fabric, paint and paper mache, Phillips creates works of art filled with her vibrant dreams, memories from her childhood and a dark mystery.

“I am very drawn towards whimsical and magical themes,” she said.

The show, taking place Oct. 16 through Nov. 8 at the Yellow Springs Arts Council Community Gallery, is a collection of many different kinds of art that she has worked on for the past 10 years. There are various styles of fabric art, representational and abstract, as well as three dimensional paper mâché “paintings” and structures.

Phillips has lived and worked in the village of Yellow Springs for more than 20 years. She loves making her art, and feels lucky to have time to devote to her creations.

Much of the show consists of abstract quilts, exploring bold color combinations and patterns, but Phillips also likes to make evocative story quilts with scenes of carousels, russian nesting dolls, and belly dancers.

“I often find inspiration in fantasy books, movies and art and try to create a certain sense of wonder and brightness in my work,” she said. “Some of the newer pieces in the show are three dimensional paintings and a paper mâché fairy tree house.”

Her paintings are mostly carnival and fantasy world themed. They are inspired by her childhood summers spent on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

“The piers along the boardwalk all had amusement parks and carnivals,” Phillips said. “They often appear in my dreams mixed together with Fantasy City Scapes and vibrant, wildly colorful landscapes.”

A reception for the show will take place 6-9 p.m. Oct. 16 within the YSAC Community Gallery, 111 Corry St. The regular hours of the gallery are 1-4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
