XENIA — Xenia Community Schools will officially open the new turf on Veterans Field at Doug Adams Stadium Friday.
Prior to the Ohio High School Athletic Association-sanctioned jamboree game against Fairmont a ribbon cutting will take place to kick off Community Night.
Special guests expected to appear during ceremonies at 6:35 p.m. include Edna Adams, whose $250,000 contribution kick-started the turf project; representatives from Miami Valley Hospital, which entered into a multi-year sponsorship deal with the schools; John Caupp, president of the Wee Bucs which donated $50,000 to the project and Charlie Lamb, representing the Club X Soccer Association, which donated $20,000.
Community members who donated at least $5,000 toward the project will also be recognized.
The total project cost approximately $650,000; more than $715,000 was raised.
“We have taken the additional dollars raised and have set them aside toward a new all weather track,” Superintendent Denny Morrison said. “Not one cent of this project is coming from school taxes. Everything is coming from donations.”
The turf, which has a 10-year warranty, will allow Xenia to host football and soccer tournament games as well as band competitions.
“We anticipate thousands of outsiders coming to Xenia,” Morrison said.
