Sketchbook part of Bible prof’s portfolio

CEDARVILLE — When Cedarville University professor Dan DeWitt, Ph.D., does not have a textbook in hand, he can often be found with a sketchbook instead. Recently, this hobby gave him the opportunity to provide sketches of historic authors for a limited edition book series by Broadman and Holman.

“I really enjoy sketching, so any opportunity that I have to use that gift in a way that might be more lasting than just a notebook that will get lost is always a really neat opportunity,” DeWitt said. “I get to do something I enjoy in a way that’s going to make it lasting beyond my sketchbook.”

“The Legacy of Faith Library” includes leather-bound copies of books from eight historic authors, such as Augustine, Martin Luther and G.K. Chesterton. Only 5,000 of these limited edition sets are available for purchase.

The company asked DeWitt to provide a sketch of each author in the series, and they can be viewed on the Broadman and Holman website.

DeWitt serves as assistant dean of the school of biblical and theological studies, director for the Center for Biblical Apologetics and Public Christianity and associate professor of applied theology and apologetics. For a time, he stopped sketching to solely pursue academics.

“I thought it was silly,” DeWitt said.

After discovering the works of G.K. Chesterton, who illustrated as many books as he wrote, DeWitt picked up his sketchbook again and has continued to pursue both academic and artistic endeavors ever since.

“If anything, I would love to communicate to people that loving God can look like picking up an academic textbook or picking up a sketchbook,” DeWitt said. “There’s a time for both.”
