Electrical aggregation pays off for residents

XENIA — As a result of the November 2014 vote to authorize the Greene County commissioners to aggregate electrical generation, residents and small businesses in the unincorporated areas of the county have saved approximately $844,000 on the generation portion of their electric bills since July 2015, the county said.

Under governmental aggregation, the commissioners act on behalf of electric consumers in the community to negotiate an electric supply contract with an eligible supplier.

The savings were made possible through aggregation, or combining, of the electrical load of each account.

“The program allows us to combine our electrical loads and ask the market for a better price based on volume,” said Commissioner Alan Anderson. “This is a great benefit for our residents who expect us to help where we can.”

The agreement with IGS Energy calls for a rate of 5.95 cents per kWh through the May 2018 billing cycle. There are approximately 8,500 eligible accounts within the county. Of those, about 4,800 have taken advantage of the lower rate. Account holders in the unincorporated areas of the county can still sign up for this rate.

“This is quite a bit of money people can put to use in other ways or it can provide them with breathing room in their budgets,” said Commissioner Bob Glaser.

Regarding the remaining 3,700 eligible residents, Commissioner Tom Koogler said, “I hope they will look at their current rate as well as the cancellation clause in their agreement and take advantage of the program if it makes sense for them.”

Residents and small businesses in the unincorporated areas of the county who would like more information can contact the commissioners’ office at 937-562-5006 or IGS Energy directly at 1-877-353-0162.
