XENIA – People packed the seats for over two hours in the cattle barn Wednesday evening at the Greene County Fair for the 4-H and FFA Dairy, Scramble, and Market Beef Show. Dozens of kids showcased their cows over multiple classes and divisions.

The kids collectively spent hundreds of hours of preparation, and it showed, as the judges repeatedly pointed out that it was hard to pick just one winner for each class.

Ben Harner and his cow, Tonto, won the night’s big prize, the Grand Champion trophy for market beef. Harner said he enjoyed the win.

“This is my last year showing cows at the Greene County Fair,” he said, “and I’m just really happy about it.”

Harner, who has presented at the fair for nine years, said he worked with Tonto every day for two to three hours since last August.

Rachel Hammond and her cow, Bilbo Baggins, won Market Beef Class One. Hammond said she worked day and night for an entire year for this event. She also commended Bilbo on his calm demeanor.

“He’s nice, he’s sweet, he’ll stand still. You don’t have to worry about him going crazy.”

Zoe Sears won the Dairy Market Beef category with her cow, Brownie.

“I’ve had him since he was a feeder cow, and I showed him last year,” she said. “I brought him back this year, and I worked with him every week.”

This is Brownie’s last year, but Spears has already found his replacement.

“My feeder calf that I took this year is coming back as a steer next year,” she said.
