BEAVERCREEK — It was supposed to be a relatively easy match for coach Carol Bysak’s Beavercreek boys volleyball team, and it was.
Beavercreek, currently ranked eighth in Ohio in the latest Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association Division I poll, rolled to a 25-6, 25-8, 25-10 win over an inexperienced Fairborn team, Thursday night in Beavercreek High’s Ed Zink Fieldhouse. The match barely lasted 45 minutes in all.
“We pretty much expected to win this one. Fairborn is a very young, but improving team,” Bysak said. “In the first set, I played my starters. And that match was very typical of the way we play, although I don’t think we played with the same kind of intensity we usually bring. The second and third set had mostly juniors in the lineup. Some of them were regular starters, but some others were in there so that we could give them some needed playing time. I thought the players did a nice job of stepping up to the plate tonight.”
Junior setter Noah Boos dished out 21 assists, served six aces, had four digs and blocked two Skyhawks shots to lead Beavercreek (14-8). Junior Chandler Hemmerich was credited with six kills, junior Dan Lohner came up with two kills and two blocks, and sophomore Alec Otto had five kills and three digs in the win.
“Noah has been my setter for three years now, and he’s doing an outstanding job for us this season,” Bysak said. “And I thought Dan Lohner, who’s also a junior, did a nice job for us tonight at the middle hitter position.”
Several of the Beavers’ points came as the result of Fairborn miscues on the other side of the net. In the third set, just two of Fairborn’s 10 points were the result of winning hits or serves.
Unofficially, Ryan Miller led Fairborn (0-11) with two kills and a block. Noah Cain had a kill and an ace serve, and Kris Dierker hit two service aces and was also credited with a kill.
Five of their 11 loses have come against state-ranked opponents.
“We just had too many mistakes, but it’s still different from day one,” Fairborn coach Mel Dumanlang said. “We’ve made a lot of improvement in the way we play the game, but people will look at the score or our record, and they won’t see that. But these guys have made a lot of improvements this season.”
Fairborn will host a Senior Night on Tuesday. They’ll honor the team’s two seniors — Ryan Miller and Brad Hurst — in a 7 p.m. match against Clayton Northmont. According to the Ohioboysvolleyball.com website, Fairborn is scheduled for a road contest on Saturday against Akron Hoban, a team ranked seventh in the latest Ohio Division II poll. That 11:30 a.m. game will be played at Cincinnati St. Xavier High School.
“I know Fairborn’s coach is new this season, but if that team develops some more discipline, they can once again be a quality state-ranked team. They were one of the state’s best before, they can get back there again, if they work hard at it,” Bysak said.
Beavercreek’s next match will be a Senior Night for Connor O’Gorman, Spencer Berry, Kyle Petering, Joe Wiles, Tyler Robinson, Andrew Boos and Bryan Deis. That match will take place on Tuesday against Centerville. The contest has also been tabbed the OHSBVA Game of the Week and will be broadcast by ESP Media on highschoolcube.com, starting at 6:30 p.m.
