COVINGTON - Miami County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a drowning at Greenville Falls, west of Covington.

Crews responded to the falls, near the intersection of Rangeline and Covington-Gettysburg Road around 4 p.m. on the report of someone in the water.

The scene was described as approximately 1000 feet above the falls near the “old dam”. Covington Patrolman Jeremy Bubeck was first on the scene, followed closely by Covington firefighters Sam Palsgrove and Jeremy Yingst, both of whom entered the water to attempt to rescue the victim, identified as Toni Fischbach, 65, of Wapakoneta.

Their efforts were hampered by the raging force of the high water flowing toward the nearby falls.

Rescuers were able to reach Fischbach and get her to shore after about 20 minutes.

Fischbach was transported to Upper Valley Medical Center by the Covington Rescue Squad. Lt. Michael Whaely of the sheriff’s office said that she passed away around 8 p.m. in spite of heroic efforts by Covington EMS and UVMC personnel to save her.

A detective from the sheriff’s office was called to the scene, as was Miami County Victim Witness.

Witnesses on the scene said that a Fishbach and her husband were hiking and taking photos on the trail above the falls when she allegedly slipped on ice while exploring around “the old dam,” approximately a quarter mile west of the falls.

The investigation is ongoing.
